Abstract

Conventional three-phase induction motor forward-reverse control typically relies on hardwired contactor and relay logic, which is inflexible and offers no remote visibility into system state. This paper presents the design and implementation of a low-cost, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) based control and monitoring system using commercial industrial-grade components. A Siemens LOGO! 8.3 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) executes a timer-sequenced forward-reverse cycle (10 s Forward, 10 s dwell, 10 s Reverse, 10 s dwell, repeating every 40 s) with software interlocking between the Forward and Reverse contactor outputs, while Siemens LOGO! Web Editor provides a browser-based monitoring dashboard over the PLC's built-in web server, without a supervisory controller or licensed SCADA software. The system was verified across 21 trials spanning start/stop control (6 trials), timer-sequence accuracy (5 trials), web-based monitoring accuracy across seven operating and fault states, and Emergency Stop protection (3 trials), plus a separate Thermal Overload Relay trip test. All trials produced the expected outcome. The monitoring dashboard matched actual system state in every observed condition, and the protection system halted the motor immediately under both manual emergency and simulated overload conditions. The results demonstrate that reliable forward-reverse motor control and real-time IIoT-based monitoring can be achieved at a cost and complexity accessible to small-scale industrial or educational settings. The system's monitoring scope is limited to control-sequence and protection state within the local network. Extending it with motor-condition sensing and adjustable timing are identified as directions for future work.
