Focus and Scope

Research and Innovation in Applied Linguistics (RIAL)stands out as a distinguished publication due to its rigorous double-blind review process and commitment to nurturing authors through mentoring. The journal revolves around Applied Linguistics, with an emphasis on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and vocational English education. This focus underscores the practical application of language learning, particularly within professional contexts.

Themes of Interest: The journal is organized around four key themes that form the backbone of its content:

  1. Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL), Problem-Based Language Learning, Task-Based Language Teaching & Learning, Autonomous Learning, Collaborative Learning: These themes explore dynamic and interactive methods of language education that engage learners in real-world tasks and encourage autonomy and collaboration.

  2. English for Various Professions: RIAL delves into the realm of specialized English, catering to diverse vocational contexts such as Business, Accounting, Engineering, Health Professions, Law, and Marine Professionals. The aim is to facilitate effective communication skills within specific fields.

  3. Technology in Language Learning: In the digital age, technology is a driving force in education. RIAL covers topics related to Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL), Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TALL), ICT in Applied Linguistics, and Digital Literacy, providing insights into leveraging technology for effective language learning.

  4. Professional Development and Case Studies: RIAL supports the growth of vocational English educators through discussions on Vocational English Teacher Professional Development, Best Practices in ESP, and insightful Case Studies. Additionally, the journal welcomes ethnographic studies that shed light on the human aspects of Applied Linguistics.

  5. Other topics that relevant to applied linguistics, vocational English education, English at the workplace, ESP, business English teacher identity, and business English writing. 

Peer Review Process

he manuscript submitted to the Research and Innovation in Applied Linguistics-(RIAL) will undergo a rigorous evaluation process to ensure that it meets the journal's standards and is suitable for publication. The following processes will be followed:

  1. Editorial Review: The manuscript will be evaluated by the editorial team to ensure that it meets the criteria, scope, and focus of the journal. The editorial review will assess the quality, accuracy, clarity, and organization of the content. This process may include checking for grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, tone, and factual accuracy. The goal of the editorial review is to provide constructive feedback to the author(s) and to ensure that the manuscript is of the highest quality.

  2. Blind Review: Once the manuscript passes the editorial review, it will be sent out for blind review by two independent reviewers who are experts in the field. The reviewers will evaluate the manuscript based on its originality, clarity, and significance. They will also assess the methodology, results, and conclusions. The editor will assign two reviewers to review and mentor the author(s) to revise and polish the manuscript.

  3. Mentoring: Our reviewers and editors will provide feedback and guidance to the author(s) on how to improve the manuscript. The reviewers will work with the author(s) to revise and polish the manuscript. The mentoring assistance will go for two rounds. If the revised manuscript is not satisfactory, it will be rejected. The goal of the mentoring process is to help the author(s) improve the quality of their manuscript and to ensure that it meets the standards of the journal.

Research and Innovation in Applied Linguistics (RIAL) is published twice a year: February and August.

Open Access Policy and Licensing

RIAL is an open access journal, meaning all content is freely accessible without cost to individual users or their institutions. Readers are permitted to read, download, copy, share, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, and use them for any lawful purpose, without needing prior approval from the publisher or authors. Readers must NOT be registed or log-in to view the published articles. All works published in this journal are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0). This license allows others to remix, adapt, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially, as long as appropriate credit is given to the original authors and the resulting works are distributed under the same license.

AI Policy

Authors may use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, GrammarlyGO, or DeepL Write to support language polishing, grammar correction, or idea development. However, the use of such tools must be transparently declared in the manuscript, preferably in the acknowledgments section. For example: “The authors used ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2024) to improve the clarity and language of the manuscript draft.” AI tools must not be listed as authors, as authorship requires accountability for the content and intellectual contribution—responsibilities that AI tools cannot assume. Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of any content generated with the assistance of AI, and they must carefully review and revise such content to avoid errors, biases, or misinformation. The use of AI tools to fabricate data, references, or findings is strictly prohibited. Any AI-generated images, text, or data must be clearly disclosed and properly identified in the manuscript. Moreover, the use of AI must comply with ethical research standards and must not infringe on data privacy or copyright laws. Editors and reviewers may use AI tools to support their workflow, such as for language checking or summarization, but must not rely on AI to assess the originality, scholarly value, or validity of a submission. All editorial and peer review decisions must be made by human experts.

Publication Fee

Publication in Research and Innovation in Applied Linguistics (RIAL) is free of charge [GRATIS]RIAL currently charges no fees and all publication costs are covered by UPT Bahasa Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang [this policy may subject to change in the future]. If there are those who claims to offer such payment for publication please report to our editorial team.

Journal History

RIAL is organized and published by the Language Center (UPT. Bahasa) Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang. It is a scientific forum for research and current innovation in Applied Linguistics. It publishes research, review, interview, and book review articles in the field of Applied Linguistics, language teaching and learning within the vocational context and beyond.
