Conventional extraction is no longer effectively being applied since it uses a large volume of solvent, requiredlonger time of extraction and less yield produced. So that alternative extractions, such as extraction using ultrasonic andmicro waves, is developed. The aims of this research are: 1. To study the influences of power applied, ratio seaweed andtimes to produce yield of extraction with micro vave, 2. To study the influence of times of extraction to quality ofextraction with ultrasonic wave, 3. To compare karagenan yield using micro and ultrasonic waves, 4. To comparekaragenan’s quality extracted by micro and ultrasonic waves. Ultrasonic wave extraction conducted at 50 oC, 40 kHzfrequency, with medium power, ratio seaweed and solvent 1/30, pH 8,5-9, and extraction time of 40 minutes. Whereasmicro wave extraction conducted with variation of power applied, ratio seaweed and solvent, and extraction times to theyield of karagenan. Quality tested parameters include water content, ash content, viscosity, and gel strength. By microwave extraction found that power, ratio seaweed and solvent, and extraction times increase, the yield increases.Addtionally as time extraction increases, its water content and gel strength also increase with ash content remain constantwhile its viscosity decreases. Karagenan yield extracted with ultrasonic waves is found greater compared to micro waveat the same temperature and times of extraction. Both ultrasonic and micro waves extractions show their gel strength andwater content fulfilled commercial karagenan standard, their viscosities and ash content also fulfilled to FCC standardand their viscosity and water content also fulfilled to FAO standard.
