Abstract

The aim of this study is to apply steel slag as aggregate on the characteristics of self compacting concrete
(SCC). This experimental study was carried out with mixing fresh SCC using iron slag as partial substitution of coarse
aggregate and aggregate that were obtained from PT Barawaja in Makassar. Two types of cement binder such as Portland
Composite Cement and Silica Fume are used as binders to produce SCC mixtures. Observation of aggregate
characteristics and design of SCC concrete mixtures are designed in accordance with SNI 03-2834-1993 and The
European Guidelines for Self-Compacting Concrete. The criteria assessment of SCC concrete were evaluated based on
flowability, viscosity and passing ability values of fresh concrete with the testing method Slump flow, V-funnel and Lbox
apparatus. Finally, concrete cylinder specimens in dimension of 100 mm in diameter and 200 mm in height were
casted then immersed in water curing. After achievement at 28 days, concrete cylinder specimens were tested in
compressive strength according to SNI 1974: 2011. The results concluded that iron slag fulfill the requirements used as
raplacement of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate in SCC concrete production with compressive strength of 59.94 MPa.
