Abstract

ELT in the era of digital technology has brought significant changes to the language learning interaction and
teaching especially in the use and the development of materials. The internet is the biggest information data base
which provides opportunities for EFL teachers to be used in the learning activities. Grounded in a microethnograpic
participatory action research, this study explored the internet as the potential source of materials for
effective, interesting, and flexible learning. This research involved both teacher and student as the participants
who worked together in a small group and context to explore the internet as the corpus of language
materials/resources. The research informed a design for the development of the internet-based materials as the
results of the meaning making process that involved a series of activities starting from the materials search,
selection, development, and the use in the EFL classrooms. The activities brought contribution to the student’s
participation, engagement, and cognition as they were directly exposed to a micro-reality context of language
learning and material development. This study suggests that every student is an important agent of learning
whose voices and inputs are the significant factors determining the success of the language material
development.
