Abstract


The study aimed to describe the linguistic-areas and dominant linguistic-area problems experienced by the students of
Business Administration Department in speaking English. The research results would be a beneficial reference for
addressing linguistic problems in teaching speaking skills to the students. The population was 107 final-semester students
of D-3 and D-4 Business Administration Study Programs. The sample that was selected randomly was 12 students. They
were requested to perform conversations in 4 groups of 3. The conversations were audio-recorded and then transcribed.
The conversation transcripts were refererred to result in the data for analysis, linguistic-area problems. The data were
analyzed descriptively. The study found out that in their oral English communication skills, the students experienced
problems with all the linguistic areas, namely morphology, syntax, semantic, phonology, and vocabulary. Of the five
linguistic areas, the dominant problem was the limited vocabulary they had.
