Abstract

Biodiesel production will produce a side reaction in the form of glycerol. The use of glycerol by using it as a
substrate in the fermentation process of itaconic acid production because glycerol still has alcohol sugar. The purpose of
the study was to determine the effect of aspergillus tereus and aspergillus niger biocatalysis from the time of fermentation
on the concentration of itaconic acid produced. The variables used were fermentation time 3,6,9,12 and 15 days and the
types of microorganisms used were aspergillus tereus and aspergillus niger. Modified 300 ml glycerol substrate was put
into a fermenter containing 500 ml of NPK nutrient and 25 ml of ascomycota starter with a liquid flow rate of 0.4 L/min.
Fermentation results are filtered and purified by rotary evaporator. The best research results at 9 days fermentation for
aspergillus tereus with glucose yield of 4,9% and concentration of itaconic acid 73.28 g/L while Aspergillus niger was
the best condition at 12 days with glucose levels of 6,4% and concentration itaconic acid is about 45,52 g/L.
