Abstract

Solid catalyst synthesis has been carried out, including sulfonated titanium dioxide catalysts and theirderivatives. These catalysts can be used to help the reaction to biodiesel production. However, information about thecatalyst synthesis processed related to the calcination temperature and its effect on the conversion to biodiesel formationis very rarely found. This study aims to investigate the effect of calcination temperature on the catalyst synthesis processso that it can be useful in determining the right calcination temperature in the synthesis of sulfonated titanium dioxidecatalysts and their derivatives. Catalyst synthesis using impregnation method and testing for catalytic effects were carriedout on the chemical reaction of esterification of fatty acids contained in fatty acid distillates from palm oil (PFAD). Theresults showed that the catalyst synthesized at 500 0C calcinations gave the best catalytic effect, where the conversion tomethyl ester formation was 98.1% with physical properties including density and viscosity at 40 0C in accordance withSNI standards for biodiesel.
