Abstract


Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) was formed by the ionic interaction between the polyanion of pectin and polycation of
chitosan. The electrostatic attraction between the amino group bonding (-NH3+) of protonated chitosan and carboxyl acid
bond (-COO-) deprotonated from pectin is the main interaction of the formation of PEC chitosan-pectin. The purpose of
this research is to synthesize and characterize PEC chitosan-pectin for application as a pH indicator. The comparison of
solution chitosan 3% to pectin 3% (b/v) are 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, 90 and 100% at pH 4. The process of synthesis PEC film
has used the ultrasonic method. The product of polyelectrolyte complex chitosan-pectin can be synthesized by indirect
methods at pH 4. The difference in the characteristics of the PEC chitosan-pectin of various polymer composition and
provenance are indicated with the analysis of functional group analysis, thermal analysis, swelling and color analysis.
