PENGARUH PERBANDINGAN BERAT MEDIA QUENCHING DENGAN BERAT SPESIMEN UJI TERHADAP SIFAT MEKANIK BAJA KARBON SEDANG (S45C)

Abstract


This study aims to analyze the mechanical properties (hardness, impact strength) of medium carbon steel (S45C)
which is quantified with water cooling media. The research method used is a heated S45C Steel specimen using an
electric furnace at a temperature of 850OC for 6-8 hours with a holding time of 60 minutes. S45C steel specimens were
then quenched on water cooling media with a ratio (weight of cooling media: weight of specimens) was 2: 1, 4: 1, 6: 1, 8:
1, 10: 1. Furthermore, S45C steel was tested for hardness and impact test. The conclusions of this study are: 1). Hardness
values are in the range of 50.4 - 56.4 HRC. The highest hardness value was in the ratio of 10: 1 at 56.4 HRC, 2). Where
the impact strength value is in the range 4.0 - 6.1 N/mm2. The highest impact strength value at a ratio of 2: 1 is 6.1 N /
mm2, and 3). The ratio of the weight / volume of the cooling media to the weight of the right specimen to produce
hardness and optimum impact strength is a ratio of 7: 1.
