Abstract

Based on the National Socio-Economic Survey in 2004, the fulfillment of the need of clean water in Indonesia is
only about 47% of the population which covers 51% in urban areas and 42% in rural areas. In eight years from 1994 to
2002, the increase in access to clean water was only 10% in rural areas and 9% in urban areas. Pinrang Regency is one of
the districts in South Sulawesi province with abundant natural potential, including the potential of Malimpung quartz
sand. Quartz sand is one type of media that is very good for use as a water filter. The method used in this study is
experimental method which consists of two stages. First, the testing of the quartz sand of Malimpung as a filter medium
that meets the standard as a sand filter at the Soil Mechanics Laboratory. Then, the filter media was tested in a filtration
device with two diameter compositions, namely uniform and non-uniform diameter with each of the 3 variations in the
thickness of the filter media, namely 50 cm, 60 cm, and 70 cm. The experimental results shows that at the beginning of
the flow of water into the filtration device there is still sediment from the filter media which also flows. Then, at a certain
thickness (for this study at a thickness of 690 mm) it shows a decrease again.
