Abstract

In the last decade, there has been a rapid growth in population which leads to a large increase of clean water
demand and groundwater has finally taken an important role in meeting these needs. There are negative effects that arise
when exploitation of groundwater becomes excessive and one is the occurrence of seawater intrusion (SWI) which damages
the quality and quantity of groundwater. This study purposes to determine the current extent of SWI that occurred in
Jeneponto Regency using analytical sharp-interface approach and numerical-dispersive solution of SEAWAT, based on the
data obtained from the field. From the results of this study, it was found that the maximum SWI extent occurs in the aquifer
of Binamu2, where the analytical solution and numerical simulation produced SWI extent of 850.4 m and 510 m,
respectively. In general, the extents of SWI obtained from the analytical solution for four aquifers are larger relative to the
results of numerical solutions. This is due to the "pushing seaward effect" due to the influence of circulation flow in the
mixing zone which is considered in numerical solution but neglected in the analytical solution. Further field research is
required in the form of boring log and geophysical data to validate the results obtained in this research.
