Abstract

Preliminary discussions between the PNUP community service team and the Director of TIEC in Makassar, South Sulawesi, identified persistent challenges among English instructors in applying teaching approaches that foster learner readiness, comfort, and collaboration. The core issue was limited understanding and skills in implementing Community Language Learning (CLL), which, if unaddressed, could diminish instructional quality and negatively affect the institution’s revenue. To respond, the PNUP team collaborated with the director and eight instructors to deliver a structured CLL implementation workshop. Participant feedback was collected before and after the training using two parallel questionnaires with equivalent items. Descriptive analyses were performed to gauge changes in instructional competence, with particular attention to needs analysis as a foundation for lesson planning. Findings indicate an 18.75% improvement in instructors’ ability to conduct needs analysis from 42.50% to 61.25% following the training, signaling meaningful gains in diagnosing learner needs and designing collaborative learning activities aligned with CLL principles. These results suggest that targeted, practice-oriented CLL training is an effective capacity-building intervention for language-course instructors. Managerially, the study recommends sustained mentoring, classroom supervision, and program replication within TIEC to preserve service quality and institutional performance. Future research should incorporate control groups and broader learning outcome indicators to assess long-term effectiveness across varied contexts.
