Abstract

This study focuses on the design and development of an ergonomic block ice crusher capable of producing two types of crushed ice, fine and coarse, with improved particle size uniformity. The research involved several stages, including conceptual design using Computer Aided Design, component fabrication, machine assembly, performance testing, and cost analysis. The machine features a flexible and adjustable inlet channel that enhances operator comfort and safety during operation. Performance testing was carried out by varying the shaft rotation speed between 700 and 1100 rpm. Results showed that fine crushing performance was optimal at 1100 rpm, producing ice particles between 0.5 and 2 cm with a capacity of approximately 31.6 liters per minute. Meanwhile, coarse crushing was most effective at 900 rpm, generating ice particles of 5–8 cm and a production rate of up to 40 liters per minute. Compared to the previous model measuring 800 × 1400 × 1600 mm, the new design is more compact (600 × 1000 × 1400 mm), lightweight, and more cost-efficient to produce. Overall, the developed block ice crusher demonstrates strong potential to enhance the efficiency, practicality, and productivity of the fisheries industry supply chain in Indonesia.
