Abstract

The use and information technology (IT) by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is an interesting thing to know. Thetechnology is mentioned as the driving force of development that plays an important role in the sustainable growth of abusiness organization. Increased investment in IT and the strategic role played by SI make IT implementation animportant issue in the discipline of Management Information Systems. IT changes how to do business because it offersnew opportunities and challenges. The important role of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and has been proven asa driver of economic growth needs to be developed in order to have competitiveness. SME competitiveness can beachieved if using Information Technology (IT) to improve business transformation, accuracy and efficiency ininformation exchange. This study aims to: determine the extent of IT adoption by SMEs, determine the reasons forSMEs to adopt or not to adopt IT, and to know the inhibitor of IT adoption factors by SMEs. This research wasconducted in SMEs in Antang Urban Village, Manggala Sub-district, Makassar. The results of this study indicate thatthe level of computer adoption among SMEs is still low. In addition to the IT adoption rate, this research also wants toknow the technical and non technical obstacles of computer usage and internet adoption in SMEs.
