EFFECTIVENESS OF USE ACTIVATED CARBON (BROWNCOAL EAST KALIMANTAN) TO REDUCE VALUE OF TOTAL SUSPENDED SOLID IN WASTE LIQUID INDUSTRY WAREHOUSE SARUNG SAMARINDA

Abstract


Indonesia is one of the countries that have a lot of coals reserves in the world, however, its utilization is still limited to
the manufacture of briquettes and used as fuel for power generation. Coal has potential as raw material for making
activated carbon, because it has high carbon content. Activated carbon can be utilized in the process of waste treatment
including industrial Sarong Samarinda. This study aims to determine the effect of the amount of adsorbent added to the
degradation of parameters Total Suspended Solid (TSS) and pH wastewater of industrial sarong cloth. Coal that has been
carbonized and uniformed size -40 + 65 mesh is physically activated at T = 800 C with a 2.5 hour activation time.
Furthermore, the analysis of activated carbon testing in accordance with the quality requirements of Indonesian industry
standard SII 0258-79. Activated carbon resulting from the process of physics activation is then applied to the processing
of industrial liquid waste Sarong Samarinda , which located in Samarinda Seberang. This research was done by adding
5% .10% and 15% activated carbon weight to 700 ml of industrial liquid waste sample of Samarinda Sarong cloth and
done by adsorption process, filtering process and parameter analysis of environmental pollutant parameters such as TSS
and pH. The initial liquid waste of the Sarong Samarinda cloth industry has a TSS value exceeding the industry liquid
waste quality standard threshold of 93.652 mg/liter and pH 5.59. After the adsorption process on the addition of
activated carbon 5%, 10% and 15% obtained value of TSS respectively of 17.332 mg/liter; 1.838 mg/liter; 1.410
mg/liter and pH respectively 6.13; 6.46; 6.92. The decrease of TSS value happened 81.49% - 98.49%. From the results
obtained, the use of KALTIM browncoal active carbon is quite effective to reduce the value of TSS and increase pH of
the liquid waste in the Sarong Samarinda cloth industry in accordance with KepMen LH. 51/MENLH/10/1995.
